Margarita Williams is returning to her roots for her brand new exhibition this autumn.

The exhibition contains much of Margarita’s recent work – most of which is inspired by the landscape and wildflowers all around her. She works mostly in watercolour and mixed media techniques.

Margarita, who was born in Harris, moved to Oban when she was young. “I always loved drawing and painting, and studied at the Glasgow School of Art, after which I went into art teaching. It wasn’t until she returned to Harris and observed the wildflowers that her love of painting was reignited.

“I started picking and painting flowers and that’s how I got back into observation painting and, from then, into landscapes,” reveals Margarita. “11 years ago I set up my studio full-time and I have sold over 80 paintings this year, to people from all over the world. It’s been an amazing season and I’m having this exhibition in Talla Na Mara Niseabost in Harris to share the more recent work I’ve produced this year.”

2019 is the first year that has seen Margarita inspired by flowers from her own garden. “I used to paint wildflowers on a small scale – but lately I’ve been looking at my own exotic garden plants, where I am surrounded by so much colour. I loved the forms and decided to paint them on a larger scale. It’s been something new for me!” she enthuses.

Margarita will be using her talent to support a local charity, Bethesda Hospice. A portion of money made from the sale of one of her paintings (after commission) will be donated towards the charity. Margarita says: “My large flower painting, ‘Hebridean Garden 1’, will be sold in aid of Bethesda. This excellent hospice charity is struggling for funds at present, so 20% of sales of all the other original work, after costs, will be sold in aid of Bethesda. Having sold many paintings this season I wish to give something back. I am hoping that people will take this opportunity to purchase an original artwork made in the Hebrides, and at the same time support a worthy cause!”

The exhibition will run from September 12th – October 31st 2019 and will be held at Talla Na Mara, Niseabost, Isle of Harris. To see Margarita’s exhibition come along to Talla na Mara, open from 9am – 8.30 pm Monday – Saturday.
